That question is no longer theoretical. It reflects a structural reality affecting thousands of girls across rural Peru, where the digital divide is no longer only an educational gap. It is a barrier to employability, economic autonomy, and equal opportunity.

In many remote communities in the Andean highlands and the Amazon rainforest, girls complete secondary school without ever developing even basic digital skills. Not because they lack talent, ambition, or the desire to learn, but because their schools often operate without electricity, internet access, or digital equipment.

This is especially true in indigenous communities of Peru, including Shipibo, Asháninka, and Yanesha communities in the Amazon, where geographic isolation and long-standing inequality continue to limit access to the tools that increasingly define participation in modern society.

When a girl finishes school without these competencies, she is not simply missing one subject. She is entering adult life at a disadvantage.

She may have fewer employment pathways.
She may be excluded from new forms of enterprise, information, and opportunity.
And her community may remain further disconnected from the benefits of the digital economy.

This is why the digital divide in rural Peru must be understood as an issue of social justice, sustainable development, and economic inclusion.
