It Is Not Lack of Interest. It Is Lack of Resources.

Across the rural highlands and Amazon region of Peru, thousands of children begin each school year facing a challenge that rarely appears in official statistics: the hidden costs of education.

Public education in Peru is formally free. Yet for many families in rural communities, returning to school still requires resources they simply do not have. School supplies, uniforms, transportation, notebooks, and learning materials represent direct and indirect costs that place real pressure on households already affected by monetary poverty and geographic isolation.

In remote communities of the Andes and the Amazon, these barriers can determine whether a child returns to the classroom or remains at home. Parents often value education deeply and want their children to study. However, when a family must prioritize food, transportation, and basic needs, the cost of school materials or uniforms can become an obstacle that delays or prevents school attendance.

This reality contributes to education inequality and reinforces structural gaps in rural education systems. Children in rural Peru are not excluded because families lack interest in education. They face barriers linked to economic constraints, distance, and limited access to essential school resources.

The consequences are significant. Interrupted schooling increases the risk of long-term educational exclusion, limits opportunities for adolescents, and contributes to cycles of poverty that affect entire communities. Ensuring access to education is therefore not only a social priority—it is essential to protecting children’s rights and strengthening sustainable development.

Education equity means removing barriers that prevent children from learning. Small but strategic support—such as school materials, uniforms, and learning resources—can make the difference between absence and attendance.

When these barriers are reduced, children return to school, remain engaged in learning, and continue building the knowledge and skills needed for their future.

Across the rural highlands and Amazon communities of Peru, supporting children’s education is one of the most effective ways to strengthen opportunity and reduce inequality.

You can be part of that change.

Supporting education is not only an act of solidarity. It is a direct investment in the future of children and communities.
