In the most vulnerable corners of Peru, where access to a decent meal is a daily challenge, there is a silent army of heroines: mothers. They are the ones who, with unwavering determination and love, do the impossible to put a nutritious meal on their children’s table. At AGAPE HAND, we have witnessed stories of struggle and resilience that deserve to be told, because behind every child’s smile, there is a mother who never gives up.

The Daily Sacrifice for Their Children’s Well-being

For many mothers in rural and indigenous communities, food security is a constant challenge. Unstable incomes, lack of job opportunities, and the high cost of basic products make each day a battle. Even so, these women find creative ways to feed their children with what little they have.

María, a mother of three in a rural community in Ayacucho, wakes up before dawn to walk miles in search of fresh products she can trade or buy at affordable prices. “Sometimes there isn’t much, but I always find a way to give my children something nutritious. I can’t give up,” she tells us, her eyes filled with determination.

Strategies to Fight Malnutrition with Limited Resources

In the face of scarcity, many mothers have learned to optimize the available resources to improve the quality of their children’s diet:

  • Community gardens: They grow vegetables and tubers to supplement their diet with fresh produce.
  • Affordable and nutritious recipes: They use ancestral foods such as quinoa, tarwi, and kiwicha, rich in protein and vitamins.
  • Food exchange: They participate in solidarity networks where they trade products to diversify their family’s diet.

The Importance of Community Support

The role of the community is crucial for these mothers. Organizations like AGAPE HAND work to provide support through food banks, nutrition education workshops, and access to food aid programs. With every effort, we help more children receive a dignified meal and give their mothers the tools to move forward.

The stories of these mothers teach us that love and determination can overcome even the greatest hardships. However, there is still much to be done. You too can be part of the change. With your support, we can bring food, education, and hope to more families in need.

Hunger is an invisible enemy that slowly consumes thousands of lives. It is not just about missing a meal; it is about an unbearable reality where grandmothers live in abandonment, children go to sleep without eating, and entire families struggle daily for survival.

While millions of tons of food are wasted worldwide, communities in the most remote areas of the Andes and the jungle barely manage to survive. Markets, supermarkets, and restaurants discard food that is still in perfect condition, while in a small house built of adobe and straw, an elderly woman like Doña Epifania drinks only boiled water to calm her hunger.

Rescuing Food, Saving Lives

Food rescue is not just about collecting what others discard—it is about transforming reality. Every meal that is saved represents a child who will not go to bed hungry, a grandmother who will not have to endure another day of suffering, a family that can regain its dignity.

Our work consists of recovering food before it is wasted and distributing it to the most vulnerable. We travel to forgotten communities, where food is not just scarce—it is a luxury that few can afford. But we do not stop there.

Beyond a Meal: Creating a Future

Feeding someone for a day is important, but providing them with the tools to sustain themselves is essential. That is why we train grandmothers, mothers, and young people in sustainable food production, crafts, and local trade. We want them to not only survive but thrive.

Each food delivery is also a door to a better future:
Ecological production workshops to teach communities to grow their own food
Training in sustainable crafts so families can generate income
Creation of local and international markets to ensure that their work is valued and profitable

How You Can Help

💛 A meal saved is a life transformed. You can be part of this fight by sharing, donating, or simply spreading the message.

Every small action has an impact. Because hunger should never be anyone’s fate. Because no grandmother should cry from loneliness and malnutrition. Because together, we can make a difference.

Caring for the elderly is a noble task that requires patience, empathy, and understanding. As our loved ones age, they may experience difficulty performing routine tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and even feeding themselves. This is where caregivers and family members can step in to assist and ensure that their loved ones receive the proper nutrition they need.

Feeding the elderly requires more than just providing them with food. It is essential to understand their dietary needs, preferences, and any medical conditions that may affect their diet. Here are some tips on how to help feed the elderly.

Plan Meals Ahead of Time

Planning meals ahead of time can help ensure that the elderly receive a balanced and nutritious diet. This can also help reduce stress for caregivers who may struggle with deciding what to cook each day. Meal planning can involve creating a weekly or monthly meal plan and ensuring that there is a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains in the diet.

Consider Dietary Restrictions and Medical Conditions

Many elderly individuals may have dietary restrictions or medical conditions that require them to follow specific diets. For example, some may need to follow a low-sodium or low-fat diet to manage their blood pressure or cholesterol levels. Others may have difficulty chewing or swallowing, which may require a softer or pureed diet. Caregivers should be aware of these restrictions and ensure that the meals they prepare are appropriate for their loved one’s needs.

Use Nutritional Supplements

In some cases, the elderly may have difficulty consuming enough nutrients from their diet. Nutritional supplements such as protein shakes or vitamin supplements can help provide the extra nutrients that their bodies need. However, it is important to consult with a doctor before adding any supplements to their diet.

Make Meals Social and Enjoyable

Mealtimes can be an excellent opportunity for socialization and connection with loved ones. Caregivers can make mealtimes enjoyable by setting the table nicely, playing music, or engaging in conversation. This can help the elderly feel more connected and involved in the meal, making it a more enjoyable experience.

Use Adaptive Equipment

Elderly individuals who have difficulty using utensils or have limited mobility may benefit from adaptive equipment. This can include special plates, utensils, or cups that are easier to grip and use. Caregivers can consult with an occupational therapist or speech therapist to determine what equipment would be most helpful for their loved one.

Provide Assistance, but Respect Independence

Finally, it is essential to respect the elderly’s independence while also providing assistance when needed. This can involve helping them prepare meals, cutting their food, or assisting with feeding. However, caregivers should also allow their loved ones to do as much as they can on their own to maintain their independence and sense of dignity.

In conclusion, caring for the elderly requires a thoughtful and compassionate approach, especially when it comes to feeding them. By planning meals ahead of time, considering dietary restrictions and medical conditions, using nutritional supplements, making mealtimes enjoyable, using adaptive equipment, and respecting their independence, caregivers can help ensure that their loved ones receive the proper nutrition they need while also maintaining their dignity and independence.

There are certain risk factors that contribute to vulnerability in older adults like health status, social network, cognitive impairment, physical disability etc.

With collective efforts, these problems can be soughted out. If elderly are not able to get medication, special care, food and essential needs, they can be at increased risk of complications and death during emergency. Join hands with Agape Hand to become support of their social life. Involving them in day to day tasks, encouraging exercise, keeping the brain busy with all safety measures will reduce them becoming vulnerable. Older people should not be neglected and food baskets with healthy nutrition eatables should be provided to them.
