Across Peru, thousands of older adults in rural and Amazonian regions live with severe food insecurity, surviving without a stable income, nearby markets, or access to social programs. Many depend entirely on irregular harvests or on the kindness of neighbors who are also struggling. According to national data, a significant percentage of rural households face food scarcity at least once a week, and elders are the most affected.

This Giving Tuesday, AGAPE HAND is raising its voice for them through the Solidarity Baskets Program, a community-driven effort that provides nutritious food baskets to families and elders living in extreme poverty and isolation. These baskets include essentials such as oats, rice, oil, legumes, pasta, and other staples that ensure a family can eat with dignity for several days.

We do not portray vulnerability to provoke pity. Our mission is based on dignity, respect, and solidarity—values that remind us that every human being deserves access to food, care, and presence. When our team visits communities like Doña Rosa’s, we bring more than food: we bring connection, conversation, and a reminder that no one is forgotten.

There is high mortality rate due to poor diet. And if the survival is there, it is full of diseases and lack of essential commodities. 

In eradicating the problems, efforts from volunteers is needed from all parts of the world to join hands together and create food baskets and clothing for such vulnerable people. There is no food supply or agriculture in such areas so that people earn their livelihood. Helping hands are needed for building common pots to provide well balanced diet.
